Trumpet suggestions

Post by LAturkey »

Looking to get my first trumpet and I was just wanting some suggestions on where to start looking since I don't know much about them. I can play a wing bone pretty good but I just want something different. I wanted to keep it around 100 dollars but I don't really have a limit on turkey hunting equipment! Let me know what y'all think I should get. I was also wondering how similar a wing bone is to a trumpet as far as difficulty. Thanks a lot!

Not a trumpet but check out Mark Sharpes Cane calls. As far as difficulty goes, if you can play a wingbone you can play a trumpet/cane call. As long as the call is capable of producing the sound.

There are several of us on here who make trumpets and I agree that if you can play a wingbone you should be able to play a trumpet just as well.

As already mentioned, Mark makes some great calls, Misfire (Lee) does also.

Here are a couple pics of mine. REX Calls. They are in your price range.

Kenny Pedelahore aka KP Calls, Billy McCallister/Del Crowe (savduck) with Natural Addiction, Billy Buice, or Matt Mclain

Thanks for all the suggestions! Does the type of material it's made out of affect the sound of it like a box call or is it just for looks mainly?

I run a KP trumpet or a Mark Sharpe river cane on almost every hunt.

Affects the sound some but the fancy wood is used mostly for looks. I like to use dense hard wood rather than soft wood. Any good call maker will match it up with the correct mouthpiece for the proper tone no matter what the wood.

That KP will help the learning curve and if not for you there should be no problem getting your money back

Does a lip stop make a difference on a wing bone. Mine don't have one and I still suck at sucking on it.
For real though.

Get you a number 2 stopper and drill a hole in it. You can grind it down on a grinding wheel to the size you want. I just had to make one. I put the stopper in a 17mm socket and ground it down flush with the socket on a grinding wheel. Word of caution, wear a cup, safety goggles and a hard hat. It's surprising how fast a grinding wheel can throw it at you.

It's one size bigger or smaller than a #1 lip stopper, I forget.

It's what goes in the end of test tubes. Probably could get one at the hardware store, or EBay.
