Scoped....
But I got the bastard (I think). I've been after this one bird on some public ground for three years. There have Always been closer birds to fill my tag with but this year I went after him pretty hard. He roosts on a giant ridge overlooking a 30 acre meadow and the world belongs to him. I missed him the day before he died when I forgot to load a shell in the chamber....fast forward to the next morning and you'd see me sneaking towards his tree like a villian In the dark. He's hammering, 60 yards away down slop, and I'm looking for a tree to sit on when he pitches down 10-15 feet away over my left shoulder!
Completely off guard, I swung on him and the last image I remember was the biggest "WTF" look you have ever seen on turkey. I remember it in vivid detail because it was somewhere between 2-5 magnification! More vividly, fast forward 2 seconds and I'm rolling on the ground, blood pouring everywhere, blinding head pain, broken nose, and chipped teeth and blood in my mouth. At first I thought my gun exploded but turns out I ROYALLY scoped myself.
Now, I haven't gotten the ER bill yet, but I've gotta tell you it was worth it to see this old bastard die. The thing of the matter though is that in my history of hunting him, this year included, he has always roosted alone. That is, until the morning of his "death". That morning, there was another bird with him that was also hammering. I want to say I killed the right guy, but with the concussion, I cant't be sure. I really really hate that I'm going to have to go back next year to make sure.

I was a mile and half in and my head was throbbing so bad I wanted to leave the dang thing there.appalachianassassin wrote:this is why I went to a ff3. that had to hurt.
Definitely thinking about going back to the Reddot. Gonna look around and see if they make some sort of rubber donut protector though.
Re: Scoped....
Oh no! Should get that gobbler done as a full body mount, and have a copy of your hospital bill with blood spatter lying on the forest floor at his feet. Very memorable, indeed.

Ouch doesn't begin to describe how you must've felt. Glad you got the bird, I'd hate to see what happens to you had he lived another year.

Been there done that. Congrats on the bird. I was worried about it causing a flinch so I went the next morning and killed another one, no problem with a flinch.

Re: Scoped....
Congrats on the bird and thanks for the chuckle. Truth is what makes those birds so tough is its usually two of them working together to mess with you. Sometimes three!

How long was his spurs? Be a shame it there are 3/4"! It would be the wrong bird. Congratulations on the bird either way. That had to hurt. Had a 300 Wby that did that to me almost every time. When everyone saw me they would ask what I had shot.

Sonovabitch. Congrats on the bird, well deserved.
Feel, don't think. Trust your instincts.
Re: Scoped....
In the past I made fun of my buddys getting scoped, then it finally happened to me. That's what I get for making fun of them. BTW I did kill the turkey but I bleed a ton more than him. lol

I had a buddy get bit like that and took a ton of stitches. I learned from his pain and went reflex from the get go.
