Looking for a box call and aluminum pot call

Post by SwampDrummin »

Hello all you tired turkey hunters

With seasons wrapping up I'm looking to go ahead and upgrade for next year. I've wanted a really good box call for a long time and have no idea on where to start. Any suggestions on who makes a sweet sounding box call? I'm looking for one that will be used almost exclusively on western birds.

On the same note, a couple weeks ago I was hunting with a buddy that used a discontinued duel black aluminum slate. The sounds he made with that thing made me salivate so I'm also in the market for a really good pot call (and accompanying strikers). I love aluminum pots but am open for suggestions. I've always used box-store calls that were good for either loud calling or soft calling but rarely both. Looking for one that does it all. I didn't myself get a birthday present this year so ...... :angel4: :toothy7:

Disclaimer: the following is one man's opinion.

There are many call makers making very capable box and pot calls in the Southeast. Box call makers have been discussed at length in other posts on this site. I personally use a Billy White Hustlin Hen - because it is an awesome call, but primarily because no one else in my hunting area had heard of this call at the time.
There are also many pot call makers that make outstanding calls. My suggestion would be to consider a reputable call maker, or a new call maker your gut feeling says to give him a shot. Either way, do not discount the importance of a quality striker. The difference is astounding. A one piece laminate striker is my personal preference. The wood density seems to magnify the call capability ( as well as the caller's flaws).
I did not intend to offend anyone outside the Southeast with my opening sentence. It has been my experience that the Southeast has most intense and serious hunters, which leads to the most serious and intense call makers dedicated to their craft. Again, just my opinion.

You could always go the "store bought" route & get a Super Aluminator. I've carried 1 for many years & it has helped bring in many birds.

Lol, that's what's in my vest right now. I lost the one I really liked and had a spare. Dunno if it's in my head or what but I can't get the new one to sound right. I also like the tiny sonic dome crystal sold by primos.

Thanks everyone, with all the shout outs for Darrin it's hard not to start there. I just got off the phone with him and he's gonna hook me up. I should be giving an update on a week or so!

Albert Paul box call. Call him and he'll make it sound like you want it.

There are no numbers on any of my clocks below 8. Then all of a sudden, 2 days before turkey season they appear. Then right after the season they disappear.
What's up with that

There's still one on there. Anyhow, if you have time it might be best to try some before buying. What suits one person might not always suit another. There's some well regarded box call makers whose calls I, having tried them first hand, don't think much of. My opinion only counts for me. Other people who think they're great are right, too.
