17 Year Locust aka 17 Year Cicada
My trees have been full of these noisy little suckers. They’ve been singing from dawn to dusk for 2+ weeks. I was checking my hazelnut trees yesterday & 1 flew right into my face. I have to admit that I screamed like a little girl & about beat myself senseless trying to get it off my face!! All that buzzing & the wings flapping near your eyes would make even the toughest he-man yelp!!!!
I found this 1 on my deck this morning. It was still alive but just barely. It had a pretty good hold on my hand. I added a quarter in the last pic for some size comparison. The pics don’t really do justice to the color of locust. The green is very iridescent throughout the body & lace wings. They are really pretty for a bug.

That isn't a periodic cicada. The 17 yr cicadas are small with red eyes and have a orange color. We were covered up with them just after turkey season and they are all gone now. Great boost for the poults!!

One of the all time great sounds of the summer. I have been in emergences of cicadas that were so loud voices had to be raised to be heard. Amazing insects. Gil

You have an annual cicada. 13 or 17 year cicadas are the periodical cicadas with the real red eyes

Rednecks call em a July Fly.
BTW, the bird on the coin is a Scissor Tail Flycatcher. Don't know how many of you have ever seen one with your own eyes, but I'm here to tell you,... it's an amazing bird. Especially when they do loops.
