I'm trying to convince myself I also need a 28 ga semi-auto.
Who is shooting a 48 AL?

What's a 48 AL Hal ? I think I might know where a Remington 1100 28 Ga is ! It's the one with the nice stock ! 70's 80's Erahawglips wrote:I'm trying to convince myself I also need a 28 ga semi-auto.

Re: 28 gauge auto
You definitely need another one. I LOVE my 48 AL! I actually prefer it over my Woodcock. It's light, comes to the shoulder well, and points like a dream. It fits me very well. The LOP is a bit long for me on the Woodcock. And my 48AL throws a nasty pattern with the factory full choke and T9.5's.hawglips wrote:I'm trying to convince myself I also need a 28 ga semi-auto.

That's a wicked factory full pattern. Have you tried a XF choke?
Have you taken it out wingshooting? I'd be using it for doves, ducks, etc in addition to turkeys....

Re: 28 gauge auto
Thanks. I did try the Briley XF. I think it was just a bit much for my gun. I want to say I was in the 150's. If you end up with a Franchi, let me know. I have no use for the XF choke.hawglips wrote:That's a wicked factory full pattern. Have you tried a XF choke?
Not much, just haven't had the opportunity yet. I did shoot doves with it, and shot pretty well. No functional issues with light loads. I do think I prefer the woodcock for wingshooting, and I really will once I shave about 1/2-7/8" off the stock. The Franchi is so light, it just doesn't swing quite as well as the Woodcock for me. It wasn't a problem for me, I just prefer a heavier gun for wingshooting. It was not even enough of an issue for me to say that I wouldn't be wingshooting with it. It does point very well. I do plan on shooting ducks with it some this season.hawglips wrote: Have you taken it out wingshooting? I'd be using it for doves, ducks, etc in addition to turkeys....
I purchased the Woodcock, then less than a month later won the 48AL. If I had to decide which one to buy all over again, I would go with the Franchi. Those were my top 2 choices, then found a really good deal on the Woodcock, which made my decision easier. Honestly, I like having both of them. They each fit a niche for me.

You definitely "need" that Hal. It looks sweet.hawglips wrote:Here it is:vaturkey wrote:What's a 48 AL Hal ? I think I might know where a Remington 1100 28 Ga is ! It's the one with the nice stock ! 70's 80's Erahawglips wrote:I'm trying to convince myself I also need a 28 ga semi-auto.

You guys need to pull yourself together. With guns, it's never about "needs". It's all about "wants".

Looking at Briley's website, it looks like the Franchi and the CZ use the same chokes. Is that right?

Re: 28 gauge auto
Haha! That'd be about right since I bought an XF for each of mine! I'm at work until 7, I'll check on that when I get home tonight and let you know. I never saw that, nor did I ever consider the fact that they could be the same.....they probably are.hawglips wrote: Looking at Briley's website, it looks like the Franchi and the CZ use the same chokes. Re: 28 gauge auto
Hal, I tried swapping out those chokes today. Wouldn't work. I feel a little better about buying both of them now. Both chokes are Briley XF. The CZ's choke is marked as HUGLUX28, the Franchi as BERX28. They're made the same, with threads on the bore end, but the threads just didn't match up.hawglips wrote: Looking at Briley's website, it looks like the Franchi and the CZ use the same chokes. On Briley's website it appears they are showing both the CZ 28 and the Franchi to be BERXB....Waddle Whacker wrote:Hal, I tried swapping out those chokes today. Wouldn't work. Glad you didn't waste the money!
I'm going to swing by the gun shop and feel out the 48AL - but all they have is the 20 gauge. I think they've got the same LOP and drop as the 28 gauge so hopefully it'll give me a good idea. I'm itching to buy....
Re: 28 gauge auto
You won't be disappointed, they feel real nice.
Re: 28 gauge auto
I handled the 20 ga 48AL today, and it feels very good.
So, looks like a 28 ga 48AL is in my future.

The 28's gonna feel even better! I don't think you'll be disappointed....and let me know if you end up wanting a Briley XF.hawglips wrote:I handled the 20 ga 48AL today, and it feels very good.

Re: 28 gauge auto
Well, I pulled the trigger and put down a deposit on one. Should have it in hand in a couple weeks. And just in time to see if it's a shooter enough for fall turkey.Waddle Whacker wrote:The 28's gonna feel even better! Looks like I'm going to be needing some more hulls now for target reloads, so I guess I'll also buy a case of estates to shoot up.
Re: 28 gauge auto
You're going to love it. I just can't put mine down, I've used it for the last 10 hunts and am reloading steel and tungsten so I can keep using it during the duck hunt. After hunting with a sub 5lb gun, I just can't haul around those 7.5lb 12ga guns anymore.

Re: 28 gauge auto
years ago I had a American Arms Silver 28 ga and shot the snot out of it.
had a Remington sporting clays 1100 with a 26" barrel and like a dummy I sold it.
Right now I have my dads 28g a Ruger Red Label
haven't shot a turkey with it , but will one of these days. TSS will make that a reality

Re: 28 gauge auto
I picked it up yesterday. That thing throws up just right. Light as a feather. Feels good. But unloading it is a pain in the arse!
I'm going to try it on woodies in the morning, and maybe shoot a couple turkey loads through the factory full choke that came with it to see how it throws them.

Re: 28 gauge auto
Oh yeah, forgot about the whole unloading thing. It's no good. I thought something was wrong with mine. Hate to admit it, but I had to get on the Internet to figure out how to unload the dang thing. Luckily, fully unloading is only a small part of the hunt.

Re: 28 gauge auto
Yeah, I did the same thing. Gonna take a while to get used to that..... But I'll forgive it that sin if it shoots well. It sure feels good.
