Which gun would you take to the woods?

Post by alabamabowman »

Yildiz shooting #10s or Stevens 301 shooting #9s? Tried many shells combinations and these loads shot the best in each gun. I was hoping for more in the 10" from both guns but they are still both 40yd guns. ImageImage

Both look good. I believe the yildiz may be a better hunting pattern? I wouldn't be afraid to take either one tho.

It's a toss up for 40 yards. Steve Roberts observed in his guns that the 70% rule from 40 to 50 yards didn't hold true for the 13/16 oz. load because of sub 1000 fps velocity, but did hold true on the 870nm load's velocity. I have more flyers with the 870nm load that are off the 3' wide paper, but the velocity and lower pressure than the 13/16 oz. load are more appealing to me. Both are deadly patterns and the 13/16 load has worked well for me and a buddy. Do you shoot off the bead or with a red dot? Gil

I have a ff3 mounted on both guns. I have not tried 9.5s. Could they make a difference?

I have nominal 9's that run 370/oz. and others that run 420/oz. which I call the 9.5's. My 10's are 500/oz. I like the 9.5's in the .410. From what I'm seeing here, it varies gun to gun. Curiously when I shot 8's to pattern and zero to save my "good stuff", I got some surprisingly good results. Here's a thread on the 13/16 load out of brass with the 9.5's and with the 8's.
