28 gauge —A400
28 gauge —A400
Finally rolled up my first 28’s and shot a few today. Roll crimps on the 28 BP crimper leave a lot of room for improvement compared to my GAEP for the .410 and 20 but over all I’m happy with the first few loads.
Kind of odd the 20” stayed consistent between all 4 shots but the 10” did not?
All are shot with a Briley X FULL .522 (best I could mic). Want to try the factory full next..
not many chokes available for the A400 28 yet. All shots with #9’s

Re: 28 gauge —A400
Sweet. Hadn't thought of making a stencil.
Re: 28 gauge —A400
I like the stencil as well. Get a good aiming feature but able to capture the entire pattern. Think I will try that.
As far as patterns, they are all great, that 1 3/8oz load is even great. I don't get why is the 4th pattern has a lower 10" count. What is different about this pattern?

Re: 28 gauge —A400
Yeah the stencil is easy just cut out a turkey target on cardboard. Go light on the spray paint so it doesn’t get all over your hands while counting. The cross hair was to keep it together but works great as a aim point also.
Don’t know what happened on that last pattern pic it was actually my second shot. I only pulled the bore snake once in between shot 1 and 2 so maybe the barrel or choke had some fowling in it not sure because I looked between shots. After that shot I pulled the bore snake 3-4 times between shots.

Re: 28 gauge —A400
Shot a few more today. Still having a somewhat low count pattern every now and then.
Beretta full did ok but the X Full Briley seems to be better #’s and not many other choke options as of now other than custom from someone
On the 3rd shot (lowest count) I found the wad about a foot from the trap with 20 pellets beside it on the dirt and about 5 or so stuck in the wad. I think the shot stuck in the wad is causing some of the inconsistency. Any way to combat that problem? Never had that problem with the 20’s always had a filler..
Also the pre slit 28 TPS I split the tabs by hand before loading but are about 3/8” from the bottom of the shot cup has anyone split them down to 1/8” before loading?

Have you tried any other shot sizes besides 9s? 9.5s seem to be the ticket for my setup with the brileys choke in the same setup you are running. But I also run a 1.5oz load as well I haven’t tried the 1-5/8 oz yet

Re: 28 gauge —A400
All I have tried so far is the 9’s. I don’t have any 9.5’s only 9 and 10’s on hand.
I have noticed most 28ga patterns are the 1.5 oz. 9.5’s.
I think the 9’s will work well with this setup just want to get it a little more consistent in the 10” the 20” has been solid through all my shots so far.

Re: 28 gauge —A400
I run the 9.5’s in mine, I’ve shot 1oz and 1 5/8oz. Normally run 1 5/8 oz in the chamber followed by 1oz loads. I got good numbers with the 1 5/8oz load out of a compnchoke mod.
Re: 28 gauge —A400
3 more shots today. With Hal’s advice think I got what I was looking for.
Added a single round punch out of Mylar to the bottom of the TPS wad and silt each petal down another 1/8” to keep pellets from sticking in the wad.

Re: 28 gauge —A400
Forgive me if I missed it in this thread, what constriction does the Briley xfull measure to be?

Re: 28 gauge —A400
Briley says X FULL is .027. From a .545 bore of 28ga would be .518
Best I can tell from a micrometer it’s .522, but I’m no machinist. On other chokes I know the diameter of, the mic reads the stated diameter.

I thought 28ga was .550 bore that would mean at .522 mic it would have a .028 constriction. I could be totally wrong too.Ranger007 wrote:Briley says X FULL is .027. From a .545 bore of 28ga would be .518

Re: 28 gauge —A400
.550 would make more sense why it mics a .522. I was looking at a Beretta chart which had the bore at .545. I’m not sure what Briley used. Always wondered why they didn’t put diameters on their chokes?doublegobble1 wrote: ↑March 11th, 2019, 9:54 amI thought 28ga was .550 bore that would mean at .522 mic it would have a .028 constriction.
