With some of the 2 3/4 loads being developed now, there looks to be no need in 3" shell anymore.

No, especially if you are sitting on a 100 unfired 3" hulls and you have a good recipe for them that you've used. Gil

Hulls can be trimmed easily.

Think I'll stick with the two 3" loads that I use.

Have 10 boxes of 3" heavyweight to use up. So it will be a few years before I think about it.

I've gone to the .410 with TSS now BUT

My 20 gauge with the 3" Federal HW #7 absolutely has killed like Thor's hammer the last several years. If I ever go back to it that's what I will shoot until I shoot up all I have ratholed and can't find any more.

I recently got a 1 3/4 oz 20 ga load. It's a 3" and I'm curious.

3-inch 20 gauge hulls are very useful because a hull trimmer can be utilized to remove the skived edge. It is very difficult to find 20 gauge hulls that are NOT already pre-skived.

In my experiences with a GAEP 20 OTP roll crimping toolhead, unskived hull plastic produces a much better looking and OSC-compressing roll crimp. I trim stock 3" Fiocchi and Cheddite hulls to 2.73" and then roll crimp down on 1 5/8 oz. TSS 9s with a cardboard overshot card from BPI.

Remember kiddos... roll crimp: "It's like star crimping... but for men." :violent1:

I'm working on the theory that a 3" brass shell will offer some benefit because it makes the entire path out of the chamber and down the bore the same diameter. That's the story muzzleloaders have told. Plus, they got style.

Seems like that might depend on what someone’s “need” is. :dontknow:

I guess I look at it as, it will preform better than any 3” that exists, and functions in more guns than a 3” load will.

I lke the 2 3/4" better than the 3" because of the VP90 wad. The VP90 wad is called the "TANK" for a reason!!! You don't have to worry if the 2 3/4" is to long to cycle in semi-auto's!!!
