Carlson .555 for rem 870 21 inch barrel?

Post by HavenHunter »

I’m setting up my first 20 gauge, Remington 870 Youth with 21 inch barrel and I’m trying to narrow down which choke I want to try. Has anyone tried or have experience with Carlson Extended Turkey .555? I see there is lots of info for Carlson .575 but non for .555. I keep seeing these awesome numbers for I.C. .555, just was wondering if the Carlson in the same constriction threw anything close to that? Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

A lot could depend on what shells—especially shot type and total weight—that you plan to use.

I bet the Carlson’s 575 does well as it’s not ported. And the IC 555 ported makes a hotter core.

Been down that road. Go with the .575 nonported. .565 and .555 nonported choke patterns in a 21 inch barreled 870 20 gauge were blown pretty bad in my experience. .575 shot lights out. More than tight enough.

That’s consistent with my observations of a .555 constriction as well, unless you’re shooting a comparatively light load (<1-1/2 oz).

Well all guns are different and I have the same gun that you have and I can tell you that with my 1 5/8 TSS load I need a tight choke . The Carlson 575 wasn’t close to being tight enough for me. I tried a bunch of chokes and settled on the IC 555. I think if there was something even tighter I would try that too. That’s my experience.

That’s why I was wondering about the Carlson. With the numbers the I.C .555 throws and the price tag of the Indian Creek, I was hoping someone had some experience with the Carlson. Thanks to all that replied!

Don’t overlook the I.C. .562 choke.
