Considering buying a synthetic 26", Weatherby SA-08, 20 gauge, for upland birds. Does anyone have any experience having the receiver drilled and tapped for mounting Sumtoy's base for mounting a Vortex Venom? Also, any experience w/ removal of the base post turkey season and reinstallation .
I already have five dedicated turkey guns and don't need another, but would like the ability to have a multi-purpose 20 gauge.

I have one and it works fine. You do have to run 50-100 rounds thru it (high brass shells) to break it in. After that it works like a champ.
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects
I have no need for a 30-06, I have a shotgun

The Weatherby SA-08 is a real good reliable shotgun, but I don't know how good the aluminum receiver will hold up to the mount being taken on, and off. Have you looked at the Escort Standard Magnum 20ga with a 3/8" dovetail receiver, and it works well taking the mount on, and off.The only draw back is it makes the FF3 set just a little bit high off the receiver. With a little filing on the mount on the FF3 it could stay on the dovetail mount when it was removed.

we have did a few. If was going to do it to take on and off I would run 6-48 and if you ever have a problem you could bump up to the 8-40

I have a TriStar Viper G2 in 28 ga. that is purdy much the same gun and I think they are made in the same plant and the parts will interchange, I modified a Speed Bead mount (for a M2 20 ga.) for mine and I never tried it on upland birds but it works great for shooting clay pigeons.
