Who's shooting 8's
What kinda patterns are people getting with 8's? Specifically out of 20 gauges... what gun choke etc
Re: Who's shooting 8's
Shooting the Big 20XL 3" TSS #8 thru my 20 gauge Affinity & Carlsons .575 choke I get 240 in the 10" and 138 in the 20" @ 40 yards.

Good pattern, ever shot it past 40? I'm curious to how well it'll stay togetherSKFOOTER wrote:Shooting the Big 20XL 3" TSS #8 thru my 20 gauge Affinity & Carlsons .575 choke I get 240 in the 10" and 138 in the 20" @ 40 yards.

The thing is with 8's in a 20 is you are gonna run outa pattern long before you run outa energy, 9's seem to be the perfect match for the 20.

Yeah probably so, but I bit into a 9 and chipped a tooth last year, now I want to get complete pass throughs! Lol the bird was at 15 steps so it had nothing to do with rangeturkeyinstrut wrote:The thing is with 8's in a 20 is you are gonna run outa pattern long before you run outa energy, 9's seem to be the perfect match for the 20.

Re: Who's shooting 8's
You could always try a duplex of 8's & 9's. My Remington 870 21" with IC .555 put up 290's to 315 with the 1 5/8 load.. Straight 9's is high 330's to 350 with the same combo.

Have to ask: did you flop? Gilbowhunter2k9 wrote: ↑August 3rd, 2017, 1:20 pm

It was not pleasant. 9's are so small you don't even see it coming lolGLS wrote:Have to ask: did you flop? Gilbowhunter2k9 wrote: ↑August 3rd, 2017, 1:20 pm

I like 8s in a 12 but use 9s in my sub gauge guns

Re: Who's shooting 8's
I used a 7x8 load for my 12, and 9's for my 20. I'm gonna try the 8's to see how they dohookedspur wrote:I like 8s in a 12 but use 9s in my sub gauge guns

Shoot em in the head. At 15yds you won't have to worry about pellets in the meat.

When you have a 1" pattern at 15 you gotta aim where you have a little wiggle room. Bobbing heads aren't the easiest to hitbullethead wrote:Shoot em in the head. At 15yds you won't have to worry about pellets in the meat.

Before the 9s became the rage I used 8s in my 20. Then I went to the 9s.i found I got better results in my setup with the 8s and am you going back to them.

I do understand that. The pattern is tight no doubt. I think that I am more shocked that 9s did not completely penetrate at that range with having penetration similar to lead #4.bowhunter2k9 wrote: ↑August 4th, 2017, 9:54 amWhen you have a 1" pattern at 15 you gotta aim where you have a little wiggle room. Re: Who's shooting 8's
I must have a weak gun-- I have found 9's that were only half way thru, and that wasn't at 60 yds. It seems to be a tricky area. I have seen BB hevi shot not be a pass thru, but have killed several deer with them, the same with 4 mm tss, which I use for deer. was not a complete pass thru at 35 yds on a long beard--- no it wasn't a head shot, he was in a hurry!!!

Re: Who's shooting 8's
You could always run a duplex load of 8X9's. Remington youth 870, 21", IC .555 300ish. Straight 9's bumping up near 350.
I've yet to have a bird walk away from either load.
