Chokes for 870 youth

Post by sportrep »

I started loading tss this year with help from a few of the gentlemen on this forum. I am shooting a youth .870 20 ga. The IC .555 has a hot core, with @330 in the 10" and 200 in 10 to 20. I ordered a Carlson's .575 and a tru-glo .560. The goal is to open the pattern slightly in an effort to get close to .250/.250. The carlson's tube didn't perform well at all. The tru-glo is almost the same as the IC. Any suggestions appreciated!

Trulock 585

There are no numbers on any of my clocks below 8. Then all of a sudden, 2 days before turkey season they appear. Then right after the season they disappear.
What's up with that

I'm in the same predicament. Sumtoy 562 shot 353/162. Factory full 585 shot 199/240 with several outside the 20". Was thinking something in the 575 range but I don't have one at the moment to test.

I had a 26" barrel on mine last year and the IC.555 was the ticket for me posting 314 in the 10. I bought a 21" barrel over the winter and using the same choke and load could not break 200!
After trying several chokes I found that the factory Super Full (LEAD ONLY) choke got me back to around 270 range. I tried several different chokes all using the 20 XL load and this was the best of the bunch. I can now sleep at night after finding that combo.
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects

I have no need for a 30-06, I have a shotgun

Last year I set up a rem 870 20 g compact jr model - 18" barrel. With the shorter barrel, it took more constriction to get good patterns. I ended up with the Trulock .565 p/n PHREM20565. Others with this set up have success with IC .562 if the .555 is too tight.

Well, it looks like I am taking a couple steps backward. The IC .555 would not duplicate earlier results in the 10 to 20 today. Best group was 321 / 169. At 20 yards it shoots a group the size of a grapefruit. The tru-glow and Carlson's were not much better (too tight).
Best hunting pattern I found was with the factory full choke 242 / 200. I'm going with the factory full. TSS is crazy stuff.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will record them and try them after the season. I waited longer than I should have to tinker.

You need to try a Trulock in the 585 range. Probably get you a better hunting pattern

A friend is sending me 3 Trulock chokes to shoot. We will see what happens.

Shot A Trulock .585, .590, a Sumtoy .562, factory full, Carlson .575, and Indian Creek .555 (again). The IC .555 is just too tight for me to hunt with. To my surprise, the Sumtoy .562 is the choke I will hunt with this year. 40 yards 10" - 170, 10" to 20" 250. Nice even pattern with no holes. The 20 yard pattern was the size of a cantaloupe. The IC .555 was the size of a softball at 20 yards.
Thanks for all the responses. Good luck this season!

Try a Indian Creek .562 or larger diameter.
