H&R Turkey model 12ga

Post by Hoobilly »

Last season while hunting in Kentucky, my buddy Crow Arnett amd one of his sons gifted me this 5 lb something shoulder bruising turkey gun.

I new right away they wanted me to kill some gobblers with it next spring (2020) and I had a plan

Use the MiniTwister 2-3/4” with a 1-5/8oz load at 1300 fps
Add a Indiancreek 660, drill tap for a dot site Cut stock down to fit me better and show them it can be done without shoulder bruising. Just waiting on the new model Swampfox dots to be available and then I’ll sight in and go hunt

They are sweet to carry, but from firsthand experience hang on tight when you light it off! Looking forward to seeing your pattern results. Sumtoy added fiber optic sights to mine.

I love rifle sights! Sharp looker
The MiniTwister is only 1-5/8oz. Hoping the recoil isn’t much at all

I have one in a 10 gauge. Took the original butt off that had the weight in it and replaced with a aftermarket hollow pistol grip (no weight). Took a man not right in the head to shoot it, that joker is bad news. Several years ago my Nephew wanted me to take him turkey hunting, he had never been. He was a year or two into the Navy and was an expert on almost all matters, especially guns. I told him turkey guns kick, they ain't like those toys you shot in training. He said they didn't make a gun he couldn't handle. I told him I'd take him but I wanted to make sure he wasn't all talk and could shoot. We set a target up at forty. I loaded the gun with a 3 1/2" winchester #6. Told him ok, sit on your butt and put the gun on your knee like were hunting and shoot the target. He did. It rolled him over backwards and he dropped the gun. As he was getting up he said F#%! you, F#%! this gun, and F#%! a turkey! :LMAO:

I currently use the 10 myself. What pistol grip did you find that worked? I have been looking for one for mine.

I modified one that was for an 870. Wasn’t hard to do. Just a little grinding.

I remember way back in the day on the NWTF forum you posting pictures of that 10ga. Without the steel bar in the stock they tend to make a guy go cross eyed

Nice looking setup, thats going to be a handy turkey gun

I recently shot an old H&R topper 12ga, just under 6lbs with a limb saver slip on pad.
This was with the 3" Fed factory 15g HVWT's, I didn't think recoil was bad at all

you could load up some at 1150-1200fps, I don't think you'd feel that shooting at a gobbler

If the MiniTwister feels hot I could back it down.

But I do have the 1oz H2Ofowler load that can be used

I remember that too. I could remember seeing one with a pistol grip but never could find one for mine.

Thanks I will give it a shot with an 870 model.

Would definitely back it off to 1100 fps. Will make a huge difference in recoil compared to a 1300 fps load. And the extra 200 fps buys you absolutely nothing with TSS 8s except a sore shoulder. I shoot a 1.625 oz load that uses a light charge of a relatively fast burning powder (compared to most turkey load slow burners) in my Beretta 686 UL, and it is a pussycat.

Do the 36" barreled H&R 12 gauge topper's have any more value than the 28-30" models, enough that you would't cut a 36" down to be threaded?

You wouldn’t hurt the value

I would want a 22-24” barrel. Would be a perfect balance
