Choke tube recommendation for 12 ga oddball barrel threads?

Post by Jetboater-GN »

I have an older Franchi Auto 12 gauge that takes Hastings II chokes. I don't think any of the custom choke makers make a turkey choke for Hastings II barrels, so my choices are limited.

Here's my question: I want an all-around turkey hunting choke, not necessarily the longest range, tightest patterning one there is. Will be shooting 1-1/8 ounce 12 gauge TSS #9s out of a 25" barrel.

I already have flush fitting choke tubes with the following dimensions: .711", .700", .685" and .678"

Hastings sells extended turkey chokes with the following dimensions: .675", .665", .660", .650." and .640"

What would you use? My current plan is to pattern the .678" tube that I already have, and see how it goes. For an all-around gun (not 70 yards) I might even need to go looser than the .678"

Any ideas?

.660 or .665 would get my vote, if you don't get the pattern you want from the .678.

Here's what I got with the .678" choke. Looks OK to kill a bird, but won't win any prizes.

Have you spoke to William at Sumtoy? He might build you one.

Maybe step up your payload for better pattern. 1 1/8oz seems light for 12 ga. New shells easier than finding new choke. Just a thought

IndianCreek does make a Hastings2 choke. Not often and hardly ever in stock since its so oddball.

I have one in my Tominator muzzleloader shotgun

if your interested I can ask if they have one as I sell IndianCreeks with Gobblernation special pricing

Yella, I think that load will be a good hunting load for my gun. It's a nice old Franchi 48-AL, only 2-3/4" chamber and recoil operated. It doesn't like heavy recoil. That load is about as heavy as I can go with that gun. I have other guns I could shoot, including a 3.5" magnum, but I'm trying to go light, both carrying weight and recoil. Also have a 20 gauge I will use. I do have a heavier load for the 20.

My guess for that light pay load would be a .660 or tighter.

If you can get 9.5s, do. That'll put an 1 1/8oz load having as almost many pellets as 2oz lead sixes.

Get bigger paper targets to shoot at. 3'x3' sections of contractor paper is alright.

I agree with howl. Since you’re content shooting a 1 1/8 oz load, I’m assuming your looking for a good all-around 40 yard pattern. 9.5s will mash one at 40 even out of a .410 at 1000 fps or less. With the speed you’ll get out of a 1 1/8 oz 12 gauge load, I would definitely go with 9.5s. That would get you around 500 pellets in the payload.
