nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
trying to decide between a duplex load or straight load. nitro and apex seem to claim that duplex loads hold a tighter core . whats you guys thoughts on this for a 12 gauge? im thinking either a straight load 8 or 9 shot. or duplex 7.5x9 or nitro even has a 8x9.

Straight 9s kill and hold patterns past 70. Do you plan on shooting birds at 80+yds???
Re: nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
cant say i plan on shooting them at 80+ but if it can be done id like to have the missile loaded lol never know for self defense

The concept in the old lead loads of duplex shot was to try and strike a balance between pattern density and penetration. TSS has changed the rules. With it you get both with one size! I’d go with straight 9s

If your able to have time and load your own contact Shooter for Tss and the meanest 3.5” load you can make. It’s 2.5oz and can be loaded straight or duplex
Re: nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
I do need to start loading my own I know. But I'm late about it as usual and wanting to pick up some now. I shot federal last year but they are about 3/16" long and my maxus actually jammed and ripped the brass off the hull

I've patterned loads to 80yds and at that range I would use straight 8s but you better know your drop and wind age they really start to come into play at 70+
Re: nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
At that range does pellet count out weigh 8 lethality

Re: nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
duplex loads of mostly 9's with 8's on top are the mean ones
kills them close and far
Re: nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
Ya fed are 3 1/2" 2 1/4 oz 1200fps ....thought about the apex 3 " 2 1/4 oz 1175fps or nitro 3 " 2 5/16 oz 1230 fps...those 3" load should out shoot a federal 3 1/2"...hard to wrap my head around a 3" shooting farther then a 3 1/2"
Re: nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
I get good patterns with the nitro duplex. 3 1/2 7.5x9. 2 5/8 load.
Re: nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
That's the load nitro recommends and if you watch the apex video patterning that small town blend load at 60 pretty incredible
Re: nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
Does anyone else believe in the theory that duplex loads hold a tighter pattern
Re: nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
The only problem that a duplex load resolves is getting rid of bigger shot you don't need. For instance, I bought 8's before the results were in on 9's. A buddy got interested in TSS and I loaded 1/3 by weight 8's with 2/3rds in 9 and he was happy to get them. Otherwise, duplex loads resolve a problem that doesn't exist. Gil

I heard alot of different stories and explanations ... but in all honesty at what range can a #9 kill a Turkey?

Re: nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
In my real world testing on birds I wouldn't shoot a bird past 70yds with 9s. With 8s they will kill past where I have been able to hold a pattern together.
Re: nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
That's kind of the way I feel but have had a few people tell me of kills at 90 100 and even 110 ...by no means do I wat to shoot that far but just wondering how far they actually will kill, because I look at a 9 and I'm amazed it can kill at 40 lol

Re: nitro or apex...? straight or duplex...?
I killed one last year with 9.5’s at 58 yards.
I’ve only shot one further and that was with Nitro 2x5x7.
I try to limit to 40, but with my short 1300 and T8.5’s I would pull the trigger at 60.

It's my opinion that duplex loads limit your killing range to the smallest shot in the duplex.
