Browning 10ga Gold.

Post by UPEgger »

Walked into a gun store in Yuma, AZ today and ...... On the used gun rack(consignment) was a Browning Gold 10ga semi auto shotgun. Black synthetic stock, steel receiver. The barrel length is 28". It comes with a Briley mod choke. Been kinda looking for that model for about 6+ years.

I have the twin to that shotgun, except that it has the 24" barrel. It has been my primary called predator weapon of choice for about 25 years, or so.... If my memory is correct.

This has been a good day.

How old a model is the steel receiver? Congrats on finding what you’ve been looking for!

I guess I purchased my 1st one in 1996 I purchased it new in Pensacola, FL.
The last 5 digits on the new one is : NVR91. Mfg: 1995
The last 5 digits on my old one is: NTR91. Mfg: 1996

Years of mfg for the Browning Gold...... 1993-1998

The R91 indicates it is a 10ga Gold.

So evidently my new one is older than my 1st one. Hmmmm..... Going backwards?????

Sometime in 1998 Browning evidently changed the name from Gold to Hunter/Stalker. No indication of receiver material. I would suspect this is when the aluminum receiver came into being.

All 10ga, gold, hunter and stalker autos are/were mfg in Japan.

Shooter; Sounds like your Gold is the same model as my 1st one. I prefer the 26" bbl.

Shooter; I must correct myself. My 1st Browning Gold 10ga has a 24" barrel, not a 26". The 2nd one has a 28" barrel. It is the 24" barrel that is my favorite. Although a 26" would be a nice compromise. Perhaps one day???????.....

I went on a roll of 26"s there for awhile. First the Big 10, then a cheap azz Verona, Stoeger 2000, Beretta extrema 3.5, then Lily's M1 20ga.
All 26s. Come to think of it, I also went on a rifle kick of 26s. 260, 264 mag, 26 Nos, and 6.5x 284

I added a Browning Gold 26" 10 this year to my AyA and Beretta 10 doubles. Plans are for geese and turkey. Considered the SP-10 but preferred the Browning Gold. Got a Briley extended mag tube for snow geese also.

They are heavy but that's part of what makes them so soft to shoot. I would FAR rather shoot the right 10 ga than a 3.5" 12 ga. In the right scenario, there's no beating a good 10 gauge. You may not need it but for gobblers that hang up or pass shooting geese they are really nice.

Took Rios, Easterns, and Merriams this year with the double Beretta 10 gauge and 2 1/4 oz of 5's. One shot each and kills were decisive. I'm a fan.

Hevishot makes a decent 10ga load for a factory shell. load your own in TSS and you'll get patterns like that at 60 yards.

For some reason the parameters set for loading pictures/files will turn sideways to fit.

I haven't been able to pattern this gun at longer distances yet but my Merriams last week in NE was rolled at 40 yards in heavy brush. That pattern in the photo is with the fixed chokes in the Beretta model 410 double and I have no doubt the gun will pattern well at longer distances. I haven't patterned either of my Browning Gold 10's yet. I will probably hunt them next year.

Sorry, 4's not 5's.
These Remington loads have proven themselves in about a half dozen 10 gauges for me. I loved the older ones in the olive drab hull will matte black base.

Bad medicine for Turkey's.

Best 2 1/4oz. #4 loads I have ever shot.

Update on the "new" Browning Gold 10ga. A friend of mine (fm Idaho) told me that I did not need two Browning Gold 10 ga shotguns. Also that I should sell him the one that I had just purchased. That was a valid point and he is now the new owner of my new purchase. Ahhhh.... life in the fast lane.
