Re: Retirement destination

Do we have any New Mexicans on the board? The Gila being near Elephant Butte looking interesting. Hot, though. I've been here 30+ years now. GobbleNut way longer :D . It is certainly hot in the summer, but the evenings always cool off. I just spent a week in St. Louis, MO for work. Now that was hot...

Re: Who calls?

As long as whoever I am hunting with has some fundamental knowledge of calling, I encourage them to call. I used to be in the "let me call 'cause I know what's best" category,....until I started telling the other hunters to call in an effort to give them advice. That was a real eye-opener ...

Re: First Bird Despite Disrespectful Hunters

I won't drag anybody through the mud here about how they turkey hunt. As long as we are all confessing our "opinions" and saying our "Hail Mary's", I will say that those of us that have been turkey hunting for a long time tend to disapprove of the whole "reaping" thing....

Re: Getting Started Building Mouth Calls

Okay,...so I have put together these written instructions on how to make calls without a press or jig. ....Pretty long, but hopefully anybody that is interested can wade through it. Anything that is unclear, we can discuss and clarify. I will try to add some pictures/video when I have time. You can ...

I'll see what I can come up with. Certainly a video would be easiest to follow. In the meantime, we'll start with written instructions for those who want to get going asap.

Re: Getting Started Building Mouth Calls

Order your materials first. Call frames: I would suggest getting crowned adhesive frames in whatever size(s) you prefer. Personally, the kids frames are too small for me, the medium frames a little too big, and the small frames just about right. (these are Pioneer products) Tape: There are multiple ...

Re: Getting Started Building Mouth Calls

So if a fella wanted to try his hand at building diaphragm calls, which jig, latex, frames, etc would you recommend purchasing to learn on? I'm not wanting to get into call making for others, just for personal use. I have to run a small frame diaphragm and options are usually pretty limited so I fi...

Re: Spooking turkeys

Generally speaking, I think calling to them before the season is a bad idea. However, there are "degrees" to "calling to them". Calling to a bird a long ways off to get him to let you know he is around,...and then leaving,...is one thing. Calling a bird in close enough to make hi...

Re: Learned Or Habitat?

It appears the phenomenon of turkeys gravitating towards specific, habitual roost sites over time is pretty common across the country. The same thing exists here in the mountains of New Mexico even though there are thousands of trees that look like they would fit the bill, our turkeys just develop a...

Re: South Carolina DNR recommendations for changes to turkey season

I’m curious as to how they calculated “average date of nest initiation.” Typically, information on this and much of the other data is obtained by trapping birds and attaching radio collars to them. They are then tracked with telemetry equipment. Their movement patterns, or lack thereof, enable rese...

Re: South Carolina DNR recommendations for changes to turkey season

So for years I've always heard that they set the season for peak gobbling which was after most of the hens have been bred and the gobblers are looking for hens. So from this that means they've had it set wrong all these year's? They other question would be then the breeding season has changed? I wo...

Re: South Carolina DNR recommendations for changes to turkey season

Well put, huntin. Personally, in terms of HUNTING in the spring, I believe the most important factor is the timing of the start of the season,...which happens to be one of the main points made in the study. Before you start taking gobblers out of the population, you have got to let them have enough ...

Re: Mescalero Rez Hunting in New Mexico

I hunted it in 1990. It was only a hundred bucks back then, and in a single word, the hunt was phenomenal!!! I'm not sure now many gobbling turkeys I heard during those 3 magical days, but it must've been close to 200. It was also the first time I'd ever been in "real" elk country. There ...

Re: Mescalero Rez Hunting in New Mexico

I drew to hunt there last year. The woods were exceptionally dry. A shovel and fire extinguisher in every vehicle was mandatory or you weren't allowed to hunt and they didn't tell you that until you checked in. Not only that, but as far as I have been able to tell, they do not send you anything to ...

Re: Mescalero Rez Hunting in New Mexico

Yes,...I have hunted it numerous times. Good hunt, but the permits are limited and by drawing, and the drawing does not occur until mid-March,...which makes it difficult for out-of-staters to make plans for the hunt when they won't know if they drew for a couple of weeks before the hunt. In addition...
