Re: First time Texas hunt (suggestions please)

I can't help you out with any specific properties there, but here is what I would suggest, assuming you haven't already done this. First, start with your family and contacts they might have with landowners there, especially if you are trying to keep the cost down. An offer of a hunt trade, if you ca...

I noticed I am not on the specific ban list. Apparently, everybody realizes I am such a nice guy and never piss anybody off or start anything controversial. I will do what I can to start enough trouble to make that list in the future. :toothy7: :toothy7:

Re: Reaping

I agree that this topic has been aired-out enough to be tiresome to a lot of folks. However, it is one of the most pertinent topics in turkey hunting in the last few years. Until the issue of using visual gobbler imitations is resolved by regulation, there is still some level of merit in these discu...

Re: Reaping

First of all, I, too, am against the term "reaping". In summary, it sucks. Whoever started it should be "reaped" themselves. Whether we agree that stalking turkeys with a fan/decoy is a crappy and dangerous way to hunt gobblers, we need to adopt better nomenclature when...

Re: GOBBLER#1 + BUSTED GOBBLERS...

Got my fall bird yestiday. Got all camoed up and drove to the local Feed-A-Lot. Snuck down the isle to the frozen meat section, peaked over the edge and there was about sixty of 'em all layed out in a row. I was lookin' for about an 18 pounder, and finally got my sights on one. 'Bout the time I was ...

Ditto for New Mexico,...looks like a great hatch and survival this year. I was up in the mountains for a while this last week and was really pleased with the number of hens with poults seen. Good to hear the same has occurred in other places, as well.

Re: THE MYTH OF THE BEST SPRING TURKEY HUNTER

In the process of calling up 40 gobblers, a person has definitely NOT seen it all.... Agreed, but the question then becomes "at what point has someone had enough experience to say they have seen it all"? Is that 40 gobblers,...or is it 400? I have personally hunted with friends that start...

Re: Eastern hunter needs advice to hunt west

A few words of advice from someone who lives out west but has hunted a bit in the east. The first is, if you are going public/DIY, lose the typical eastern-states, small-tract hunting mentality. Whereas back east you are generally hunting areas of a few hundred or a few thousand acres, out west on p...

Re: Who were your mentors?

New Mexico opened its first spring gobbler season in (or around) 1965, as I recall. I was in junior high school. My dad decided to take me turkey hunting, mainly because there were turkeys within a half-hours drive and there wasn't much else going on at the time. We knew nothing about turkey calling...

Wow,...Great response, decoykrvr. I could not agree more on your ideology. Also agree with quaver's premise that once a turkey hunter has had enough experience learning the "ABC's" on how to do it, success (or failure) is often just a matter of opportunity, time, perseverance, and choosing...

Re: Number Of Wild Turkeys--What Is Your Goal In A Season??

My goal is to find out where the most "unkillable" gobbler is wherever I am hunting. When I find out, I go there and use my super-human turkey hunting skills to kill him to prove I am the "best that ever was". My secret is to go where that gobbler is supposed to be and cluck one ...

Re: Gobblers on the limb

Setting up improperly on a roosted gobbler is bad Calling too early to a roosted gobbler is bad. Calling too early and too much to a roosted gobbler is really bad. Calling from a bad set-up, too early, and too much is really, really bad. Calling at the right time, but too much is usually bad. Callin...

Great pictures and story,...but I am a bit confused. The last pictures appear to be either Rios or Merriams, but I see no reference to any hunts other than in Eastern habitats. I know in the past you have mentioned hunting Utah, was there a change of venue not mentioned? If not, those are the oddest...

I wouldn't advise checking the "proventriculus". I understand that in some states you can get thrown in jail for doing that. Then again, I think it is legal in most of the southeastern states... :D :toothy7: :D

Re: Gobbler calls

I really think that a gobbler call is useful towards 20 minutes before sunset to locate 1-3 gobblers for the next morning. I have never roosted a gobbler yet-- but the gobble shaker will give me his general area and that is all I need to know for the next mornings hunt. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... so you ar...
