Re: Beginner

Spring gobbler hunting short course: Turkeys roost at night in trees. They gobble on the roost. Get in the woods where you think there are turkeys at the first hint of daylight in the morning. Sit and listen until you hear a turkey gobble. Sneak as close as you can without being detected (you can us...

Re: Recommendations for Public Land Merriam's hunting

To a lot of folks used to hunting small tracts of land, an area 1-2 miles wide and 15-20 miles long seems huge, but in open, Merriam's country, it is not all that big,...especially if there is much access and some hunting pressure put on it. On the other hand, if it is inaccessible enough that you c...

I'd be suspicious of any outfitter telling you that they can put you on a Merriam's in KS. At best they are just ignorant, at worst they are knowingly deceiving you. How true. ...Brings to mind a day a few years ago when we ran into a guy here in southern New Mexico that was turkey hunting. He had ...

Speaking of peacocks, my wife wanted to go to Hawaii last spring. I said "okay,...but I am going to go turkey hunting while we are there". After "negotiations" we ended up going. It was pretty cool because they had wild peacocks running around in one of the places we turkey hunte...

Re: THE NEW TURKEY HUNTERS

I'm getting too old to sprint through the woods anymore,...more of a fast waddle nowadays,...but my approach speed is all dependent on my assessment of the need to get to the location I think I need to be at by the time I think I need to be there. Most often, that occurs with roosted birds, how far ...

Re: Roosting birds well after dark?

From what I have seen, getting turkeys to gobble at night after full-darkness is just too unreliable. Having said that, I also don't think trying it is going to hurt anything, and you never know, you might just get a response if that is your only option. Of course, that is assuming that you are the ...

Reaping It pretty much boils down to KNOW YOUR TARGET! If you see a fan coming at you that’s getting closer and closer, and you can’t see his head, it’s either a reaper or a gobbler walking backwards.. :dontknow: :LMAO: Taking that theory one step further, if you see a gobbler coming toward you tha...

Re: The outlawing of male turkey decoys

That's just the usual wanting to throw someone in a cage because they don't conform to your personal view. Most people that go turkey hunting have not got the experience you have looking at gobblers in the wild. That thing coming through some grass in mixed lighting is going to take more than a hal...

Re: The outlawing of male turkey decoys

I am not defending the use of a product like that,....I don't like them. But my perspective is that we should outlaw any turkey hunter that could not take a half-second glance at that product and see that it is not a real, live turkey. Anybody that would make the "mistake" of shooting at t...

Had there been an option of "no decoys or visual aids of any kind" on your list, that is what I "probably" would have chosen. Since it wasn't, I chose the "no more new rules" option. I say "probably" because I am one who does carry a fan and have had some amaz...

He made me call in front of him even though I was call shy. He then had me try a couple different calls and made sugge...

Here is a list of things that I put together for an article I wrote back about ten years ago about hunting in Mexico. I'm not sure how much has changed since that time. I would advise anyone going down there to contact U.S. Customs about the requirements beforehand. One would think that any reputabl...

Re: Outstanding diaphragm calls?

Having made hundreds of calls and experimented with the construction of the calls and call/cut designs over the years, here is the best advice I can give anyone. To me, pretty much every call has a turkey in there somewhere. The trick is learning how to tune your mouth calls to find it. Make five ca...

Been down there several times, with and without an outfitter. The danger issue is mostly blown way out of proportion to the actual reality. Just respect the people and the culture and you should have no problems. Just like in the good ol' U.S.A., 99% of the people are good folks,...and most of the o...
