Re: It's looking like tag soup for me and the boy.
I have a half-strut jake and a Funky Chicken. We had a gobbler come in two weeks ago, he saw the head and neck of the Funky Chicken from about 20 yards (he was cresting a hill) and he took off. He just got his butt whooped by another gobbler a day or two before (my brother watched the fight from acr...

It's looking like tag soup for me and the boy.
What a rough season. We've been hunting the same farm, since there's plenty of birds and we have it all to ourselves. There's plenty of woods, but the birds tend to go to the fields. Unfortunately, they always come out where we aren't. There's too many hens. The gobblers sound off on the roost, then...

Re: What Red Dot is everyone using - Pics Please
I had an eotech last year (that I stole from my AR), but went to a FF3 this year. The Eotech is a great sight, but unnecessarily heavy for a turkey gun.

Re: Removeable camo
The easiest is realizing that to a turkey, your gun looks like a stick (unless you have a glossy finish, of course).

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z234/mditt8671/Screenshot_2015-05-11-22-03-20.jpg This is for my son in the morning. Bird is roosted about 50 yards to the right of the lower mark, which is directly downhill. That mark is a big stump in some young growth (saplings, smaller trees... Think logged m...

Re: It's gotta happen soon!!
LOL! Haven't heard a single gobble yet. We had two, one definitely a gobbler, walk by silently in the field. A little outside our comfort range. Ignored the decoys and calls and continued on. We're out of the fields and in the woods until noon.

Re: It's gotta happen soon!!
He's no stranger to working for it! His first season, before they put in an access road at the farm, he got up EVERY MORNING except one for two weeks at 4am.... and walked 3/4 miles down through a valley and up the other side just to get to our spot before he finally connected. Last year (his second...

Re: It's gotta happen soon!!
Youth day: we sat in a blind and saw a big longbeard come out with hens in one particular corner, 600+ yards away. Never gobbled once, just strutted. For the opener the following Saturday, we put a blind up in that corner. Midmorning, we heard two gobbles... close... just under the ridge and out of ...

Re: It's gotta happen soon!!
We did that more often than not last year, and were going for it overall this year as well. It's a lot easier to kill a bird when you're sitting where he wants to go anyways. He's still kicking himself... a bit... for passing up a longbeard on youth day (misjudged the beard size and thought it was a...

It's gotta happen soon!!
I've taken my 11 year old son out several times... youth opener, then last Saturday and three times since. We have several blinds set up over the property. We've seen a longbeard every time we've been out! Just haven't been able to make it happen yet. They're going to the fields and hanging out ther...

Fog... forest or fields?
We had some pretty decent fog today. We were hunting a field edge. Heard a bunch on the ridges, and we ended up having one come towards us following a finger of woods out into the field but he never crossed the open field to get to us. I had to get to work and my boy had to get to school so we had t...
Re: Why
Yeah I have an 870 Super Mag that has sat in the rear of the safe for the past couple of years after we discovered 20 gauge TSS. More pain and less performance? Yes please! :violent1: I am strongly considering selling it and picking up a 3" 12 gauge pump... not for turkeys, but in case I decide...

Re: Birds quiet one day then gobbling the next
And they're still out there even if they're silent. Saturday we heard a few gobblers going off, followed by shots. Another one sounded off twice and went silent. We relocated in a known good spot and I called in a bearded gobbler who came in silently around 11am. They're out there walking around all...

Re: Help! Need Opinions!
At least it was lead 5's... TSS 9's might have zipped through him, penetrating the lung, liver, etc having him die much later. Less of a chance of that with lead shot especially at that distance.

Re: Its here
Well, our honeyhole was a bust. The turkeys were on the opposite hill. Seems that they fixed the "road"... i.e. access path... going up along the field because it had 4' of erosion. Past due. But, it's fresh, and wasn't done Tuesday or Wednesday, I'm guessing last night... and the machiner...

Re: Thinking about getting my own 20.
I'm torn. I'm seeing spotty reliability issues with the Stoegers when I do a search. And, the idea is to have a dedicated turkey gun... if I were to get the Stoeger I may just go with the bead and still get the NEF. Because it would be nice to use the Uplander for small game as well, and I wouldn't ...

Re: Thinking about getting my own 20.
The local fun store has an older, well used NEF full choke 20 that he'll sell me for $100. I'm kind of tempted. I'd want to put a short picatinny rail on the barrel above the chamber it so I could mount an optic and also get it threaded to accept RemChokes if I do end up getting it. The end of the b...

Re: Its here
Can't wait! I'll update with pics of the gobbler my 11 year old is gonna get tomorrow morning. ;) We hunted hard last Saturday for the youth opener, and he mistakenly passed up a longbeard at 40 yards because he thought the beard was short and he didn't want to shoot a jake. Then the gobbler turned ...

Re: Thinking about getting my own 20.
The Baikal looks nice but I like a wood stock, and a vent rib would be nice too (for optic mounting). Maybe I'll keep an eye out for a Spartan... good call on getting the barrel threaded for RemChokes...

Re: Thinking about getting my own 20.
I'm not opposed to getting a Remington at all. Just curious as to what else is out there that takes those chokes.
Any single shots? I have a few pump guns, and would think about either a semi or singleshot.
