Re: sling

I was looking at the one from sloganoutdoors.com. I only use a sling when I am toting one out, though. I debate whether it is easier to carry one around in a pouch versus struggling with the gun when I have also to carry a bird. So far I have not got around to trying it.

Re: TSS buckshot opinions

The trouble with buckshot, in my opinion, is lack of bloodtrail. I aim for the neck just like and for the same reasons as with gobblers. If they're flopping just ventilate the lungs with a knife. It don't take long. I'm kinda cheap like that, though. Most people just keep shooting. I ain't wasting a...

Looks like he used 1.25oz nickel 6s choked tight. Those boys over there don't like to be seen shooting anything too close.

I think I took it in a trade several years back. It was NIB or close to it. Hasn't been shot much. I guess I'll seek professional help.

Re: .410 suppressor video

I think that was pieces of one.

The only times I consider shooting without hearing protection are turkeys and home defense. Home defense is unlikely, so I can't see spending money on it. Turkeys, though, that would make sense.

O/U doubled

Had the wife out shooting clays. She has a lightweight 12ga Franchi O/U. She didn't get the safety all the way off on one shot. The gun didn't fire. She fiddles with it, on, off, etc. Next shot it fires both barrels with one trigger pull. Sounded like one right after the other, almost the same time....

Re: Barrel length

It depends. A 3 1/2" gun with a 28" barrel and a long turkey choke gets kinda long. I like a 28" barrel on a break action or 26" on pump or auto.

Yeah, it's hard to tell because small differences up close make big ones further away. Add it being a muzzleloader and you've really accomplished something by the time you get it all lined out.

Re: ML'er Trajectory question.

I ran those numbers with being 1/2" off zero at 50 yards and 10 degree cant. That's about 3 inches off elevation and an inch off windage at 100. On a little GA doe at 125 you're missing low and maybe blowing a shank off. It'll probably get one of those northern moose, though!

Re: ML'er Trajectory question.

Guessing would have to accept that it really is dead on for both windage and elevation. Then you'd want to know the height over bore. And is the reticle square with the bore? Personally, I have a poor track record with that. I'll dial it to be a little low up close so I'm not shooting over the paper...

Re: 410 test

I ain't sayin' nothin', because I don't know nothin'.

I think what we need is a shortened 28 gauge shell, in a short 28 gauge gun, using .410 strength loads, going out a suppressor with a built in turkey choke. Make that suppressor titanium.

Re: Success in Florida Quota Permit Draw

I tried Ocala once. My advice is look on aerials for houses. The turkeys will be around the feeders in those yards. I killed one on non-quota before I ever drew another quota. My reward to myself of killing an Osceola was to never hunt turkeys in FL again, so I can't comment on anything else.

I saw an episode of Michigan Out of Doors about the buck poles. That's pretty neat how the whole community can get together. We don't have anything like that down here. The weather is never cool enough for it.

Re: 20 Gauge vs. 28 Gauge

I think it comes down to the size and weight of gun you want. Whether or not you want a wider pattern might be another concern. So which are you saying I should expect a wider pattern? I've seen some strong patterns with both 20 and 28, are the 20's typically going to pattern better with similar pa...

Re: Managing the turkeys on my new land

They'll go to the preferred food sources and nesting habitat. Predator pressure will move them, too. If your neighbor runs deer feeders and spends all his time outside deer season trapping and calling predators, he'll likely draw your birds.

Some of the foreign guns say they have mobile chokes when they mean they're scew-in and can be moved around, not necessarily Beretta threads.

Re: A good reason to kill raccoons!

Fella told me one time the only sporting way to kill a coon was to make it fall out and fight the dogs. Heck with that. Too much invested in a good tree dog to let a coon rip it up. I tie the dog back and shoot for the brain.
