Re: Aging gobblers
From what I have read, and experienced, you can tell a 2 year old gobbler from an older bird. The ends of the beard on a 2 YO have not worn off yet. Certainly there are anomalies, but I believe they are rare. If you look at the ends of the beard in good sunlight you will see the tips have a reddish...

Re: Bobwhite SxS sights
Im seriously considering one of these in 20ga . Those of you who have them, is the barrel regulation acceptable. I will definitely go with the skinner sights. Also what chokes does ot take? I have a Gen. one 20 gauge. It was probably regulated for 7/8 oz. loads. Barrel regulation is pretty good wit...

Re: Over Under VS Semi Dove Guns
Pros of the O/U are I shoot less shells , I shoot it as good or better slightly than all the Semi Autos . Cons are you will spend more time looking for birds with a break action as you have to look down to reload , that split second will add 15 seconds plus to recovery of each bird . And seconds co...

Re: Question for TSS shooters/hunters
And do not discount wind drift. At 60 yds, the pattern will drift 13" with a 10 mph direct crosswind, something not unusual at all in spring, especially on the plains. The shot is capable at 60 yds, but a lot can go wrong at that distance. Amen to that. I did a lot of testing about 15 years ag...

Re: Over Under VS Semi Dove Guns
I do all my dove hunting with a 12 gauge Beretta 626 Onyx that I converted to double triggers. It fits me and I shoot it better than any of my SA guns, so I have quit experimenting. Most of the hunts I go on are with just 3 or 4 people and we usually get a lot of different types of shots, at varying...

Re: Any one else "Banned" on a forum?
A whole lot of the longtime members of this forum came from OG, where we had all been banned. I left there voluntarily when they said we couldn't post pattern pictures anymore. I wished the guy well and told him I wouldn't be back and never posted again. Then I heard that all the handloaders had jo...

Re: Replacing battery on FFIII @#$%
The original battery cover that came with my first FF3 was very thin and had maybe 2 threads on it. I always used a good screwdriver and successfully changed the battery a couple of times, but the threads on the cover eventually stripped. It happened just before the season one year and the only way ...

Re: .410 or 20 for kids?
I think it all depends on the size of the kid. A 20 is certainly more versatile, but nothing will be as easy for a small kid to handle as one of the 410 single shots. I understand wanting a gun he can use for other hunting and use all his life, but a Yildiz single shot 410 is only about $150. I thin...

Re: TN Study Debunks Later Openers
I’ve subscribed to anything that might help but “suspected” the same. Predation is/was my biggest concern. I hunt mostly in an area where I’ve seen a dip but the population is still stable. This is in an area where corn is legal and is “enjoying “ a huge increase in nest predators due to that food ...

TN Study Debunks Later Openers
I haven't seen this posted here, so I thought I would mention it. The Turkeys for Tomorrow organization recently released this on a turkey study at the University of Tennessee: https://turkeysfortomorrow.org/funding-critical-research-in-tennessee/ The most interesting part of the press release to me...
Re: Dot size
I have always used the 8 on both of my FF3 sights. I can see the larger dot much faster than a small dot. I wouldn't want it that big mounted on a pistol, but it suits me for a shotgun.

Re: Does POI change
Changing chokes or loads can definitely move your pattern, but if you keep good records and save your patterns you can adjust your scope or sight without having to sight it in each time. It's easier to do if you are only using 2 setups with the gun, but you could do multiple if you are OCD about it....

These bullets look different than the SST thank God.. The XTP is a really good bullet however. I'ma Barnes junkie, won't shoot anything else... Re: Hen with poults
I've seen 2 hens with poults on my lawn in the past couple of weeks. I haven't gotten a good enough look to count them, but one had at least 10 and the other at least 4. I have several groups every year lately; there is something about my lawn that attracts the hens when the poults first hatch. I th...

Re: Tss shell to shell inconsistency ?
You could get a roll crimper and finish the job and possibly salvage some of your investment That is most definitely what I would do with those shells. If you don't think you will ever get into handloading yourself, look around for someone who does and would tighten them up for you. If you are ever...

Re: Georgia season changes
Preacher, I have a question? What about there being less turkey where the habitat hasn't changed. That would be due to predators? Humans being a predator of course. Roy, my answer would be that there is no place where the habitat hasn't changed; it's always changing. I can literally see how much le...

Re: Georgia season changes
Blackduck, it's nice to read the writings of someone who shares my philosophy, and must have had similar experiences to me. I would only differ with you in preferring the AL system of management to the tags you talked about. AL has had a 5 bird limit since sometime in the 50s. There were a few years...

Re: Georgia season changes
SS, that was a very good post that presented the argument for greater restrictions very well. I do not deny that there are places with declining populations, but I really hate to see our turkey hunting ruined in the places that are doing just fine. Most of the issues you bring up are about public la...

Re: The one decoy you would not leave @ home
My goodness, what a thread. I think that Gil just made a joke, and it has gone down hill from there. To the OP, let me say that Gil will do most anything to help a fellow turkey hunter learn how to call one up and hunt in the traditional way. I once expressed admiration for the rivercane calls that ...

Re: Georgia season changes
Georgia uses the honor system to require the reporting of kills. Gil, I've had to report every gobbler killed in GA for several years now. The system is similar to the one AL uses, where the hunter records the kill on the hunting license and then reports it on the state website and gets a harvest n...

Re: Georgia season changes
Something has to be done. The population is nowhere near what it was 15-20yrs ago. The legal Alabama harvest was up 53% last season over the season before. That doesn't sound like we have a declining population, and yet they went with more restrictions anyway. I am going turkey hunting, but I will ...
