Re: Remington 870 16ga advice

Thanks for the input guys! 2shooter, that comp-n-choke .615 pattern is unreal. The thing I like honestly like about that pattern is the 20 inch is not terribly sparse, but you better be on them with the aiming point though. Was yours a 23 inch barrel also? Just curious. It will probably be February ...

Remington 870 16ga advice

Guys, Been on the prowl for a Remington 870 16 gauge express shotgun for a few years now, and I finally lucked out this past week. Got a very nice used Remington 870 express 16 gauge shotgun with a 23 inch pipe and threaded for Remchokes. I wanted the threaded choke barrel so that I could change cho...

Re: apex choke by indian creek?

They are like the old Indian Creek Pro Platinum Elite chokes. No porting, no wad catchers, coated with a brown Gunkote of some sort. Special constrictions available. Indian Creek BDS will shoot tighter patterns. That is directly from Stuart when I asked about them last year.

Hey VALongbeard, have you shot that load at 50 Yards? If so what did it do? Steve
Steve, I have not. 40 yards only. Averaged 145 in the 10 inch and 270 in the 20 inch with straight 9s.

Factory full - 10” 124 20” 129
Jebs x full - 10” 128 20 121
Dirty barrel wasn’t even worth counting

I figured you would have got better numbers than that with the Jebs. What constriction comp n choke are you going to try?

Re: .410 shooters.

I gave jebs a try. They did a great job threading my barrel but their choke was too tight (.381) for my setup (browning invector/ Winchester/ Mossberg threading). Pattern was blown. I’m giving compnchoke a try. They come highly recommended. So we will see. Shooting Apex 27/32 9.5s What kind of numb...

Re: .410 Payloads

I agree, even with the addition of the nitro card, I don't think pressure would even be close to max. It's a hard hitting little load for the .410. I would be curious how fast it is going.

Re: .410 Payloads

Someone reported success using 13/16 oz. in the 370NM load because of increased velocity and reduced pressures. In order to shoot the 13/16 oz load at reduced pressure within SAAMI guidelines, a lower charge of powder was recommended by Hal. This decreased velocity below the speed of sound. The pat...

Re: .410 Payloads

370 grains is the biggest payload in any of the recipes. This equates to 27/32 of an ounce. However, I prefer the 13/16 ounce payload because of the addition of mylar. Just like it in the recipe because of the extra barrel protection. Also with straight 9s, my 870 .410 bore averages 145 in the 10 an...

Re: Mossberg 500 .410 bore Dia.

I have come to the conclusion it all depends on what day the gun was built.....HaHa! There is definitely variation in the fixed choke system, regardless of manufacturer. My local gunsmith has a Mossberg model 500 .410 and his measured .389 if I remember correctly. This will put this into perspective...

Re: Mossberg 500 .410 bore Dia.

I'm pretty sure Mossberg cuts their barrels at a true .410. I read somewhere where that was measured to be what they were, can't remember right off though.

I know Remingtons nominal bore is actually .415, but I am 99 percent sure Mossberg is .410.

Don't feel bad.......it has been tough here in southern VA this week too. All the birds seem to be henned up really bad, little to no gobbling, and the wind has been terrible some days. Makes for some tough hunting.......I have a particular field they frequent, just waiting for the hens to drag him ...

Re: Rem 870 20/28 ga

They are built on the same frame.......however, you cannot just swap a 28 gauge barrel onto a 20 gauge receiver and have a 28 gauge gun. There are other things that are specific to the 20 gauge as well. Bolt assembly is different, receiver cutout is different, forend, magazine tube diameter, etc.......

Lets throw a Remington 870 express in the mix?

I would take the 870 over either of them any day of the week. But, I am partial to 870s. And, the fixed full choke barrels pattern pretty well too.

Re: Tight Magazine Cap- what is your method?

I do 2 clicks which is plenty tight on an Ithaca Model 37 Turkeyslayer (old King Ferry model) and on a Browning BPS. I have never had a POA/POI deviation during the season using this methodology, but have seen a number of scoped guns which I had sighted in before the season get as much as 3"-6" off...

Re: Tight Magazine Cap- what is your method?

Ditto on the barrel tightening procedure. I use a piece of heavy rubber on the magazine cap and don't remove the barrel until the end of the season, running a bore snake 3 times from the chamber out the barrel after a shot. I don't do a heavy cleaning during the season unless I see plastic streakin...
