Re: Rest In Peace Toby Keith

Man, that too soon! Sad after his dad was killed in a car wreck some years ago. We drive through Moore, Oklahoma, his hometown, about 30 miles from our place, when we are back home. We ate in his restaurant in OKC a few years ago.

Rest in peace Toby.

Re: Easterns this Spring

No quotas as of now for Florida. May do opening weekend in Big Cypress with else! Last year was a bust with the prescribed burn “cluster” in the unit we were hunting. So many camp owners and OOS hunters raised so much hell that the NPS cancelled the burn for several weeks. We’ll see! Granddaughter d...

Shane, as I told an old friend down this way that has spend an unbelievable amount in the park backcountry it was about as much fun with your pants on one could have!

So much to see and the quiet was so amazing.

Re: Everglades Flamingo Outing

At least 10’. Big think body. Rule of thumb, every inch from between eyes to snout is a foot in length. Didn’t have my tape measure. Here’s a couple more fairly big ones. And the Lemon shark hooked up.

Re: Everglades Flamingo Outing

They sure were good eating! Had a bunch of large gators piled on a beach in saltwater. Guess plenty of freshwater discharge in that area. Only saw one croc near the marina channel.

Everglades Flamingo Outing

Though not a Turkey in sight this outing was my hunting partner son’s gift for my 75th Birthday this week. Camped on a backcountry platform and fished and observed an amazing amount of wildlife, including eagles, tons of ducks, white pelicans, wood storks, sharks, and dolphins. Caught sea trout (the...

Re: Spring around the corner.......

Don’t mean to rub salt in a wound, but we had to breakout the flip flops and shorts today. Yesterday was 68 and drizzle but today is sunny and 84! Can’t blame anyone for heading South with those temps! Hope your pipes don’t freeze boys!

Happy New Year from South Florida! Our family scattered back to their own things. We sat by the fire ring and reminisced about the year with grandkids, etc.

Re: Eastern Spring

Easterns are not on our dance cards. Trying for quota permits or Big Cypress Osceolas this spring. Then Rios back on our place in Oklahoma. Haven’t seen nor heard birds in a couple years there, but see them occasionally on cameras.

Luck to you where to try!

Re: Okla. 10 point

Thanks fellas. Big change for us from South FL swamps and Heat. Our vacation hunts. Varied habitats. We are in central rolling mixed timbered and creek bottoms. SE part of state is more pines, west of I-35 becomes more open country.

Okla. 10 point

My son and I hunted our farm in Oklahoma for ML. Bucks we’re cruising for does. Saw several smaller bucks moving. He harvested a nice 10 point early morning. I had a couple small 6s come by but no shooters. Last morning hunt has a doe run by and figured a buck was pushing her. Within 20 seconds a ni...

Re: Happy Veterans Day a day early

Always stories. My first boat was the Sam Houston (SSBM 609). After I transferred to my second boat Big Sam was homeported in Hawaii. In ‘79, she was preparing for patrol and had to shoot an exercise torpedo that a Soviet AGI spy boat grabbed the torpedo after it came to the surface. Sub skipper not...

Jim,

Might be a Bad Birds book in there with all your experiences down there! Might need to tweak the title to some like “Bad Hombres”!

ATW, just finished re-reading #2. Enjoyed it as the first time.

Re: Pheasants, Cottonwoods and Blue Skies

Beautiful country and the birds are a bonus! We did an all day hunt in Big Cypress for opening ML. Only horned critters were on cameras from a while before. Water was a little higher than in archery. We had birds too! Just not the ones you can shoot! And an old boar bear on camera I call Hung Low Be...

Another interesting hunting themed movie is The Hunter, Willem DeFoe is a professional hunter hired to find and kill a, thought extinct, wild dog in Australia I think. Made back in 2011. Interesting story.

Her’s a shot of son’s cabin they rented on the Yellowstone in May. With snow melt runoff not great for trout fishing it seems.
