Re: Wyoming Turkeys
It’s cottonwoods, willows, buffaloberry, Russian Olives interspersed with wetlands/cattails, meadows, and farmed fields. Very diverse, not the typical Wyoming turkey habitat of ponderosa pine found in NE Wyoming.

Re: Wyoming Turkeys
You will be hunting in river bottom habitat on the Yellowtail WMA. That WMA is in the river bottom of the Bighorn and Shoshone Rivers. It’s not the typical ponderosa pine habitat that most Wyoming turkeys are found. Not sure if the birds on Yellowtail WMA are Merriams or Rios.

Re: Mossberg overunder turkey is now a thing
My Savage 555 in 28 gauge weighs 5.5 lbs. and both barrels hit to POA. Great turkey gun at a reasonable price. Trigger is a bit on the heavy side, but that’s pretty common on most lower priced shotguns these days.

Re: 28 Gauge Choke Suggestions?
Doc, my Stevens 555 O/U has both barrels hit very close to POI. I was pleasantly surprised that the barrels would be correctly trued on such an inexpensive gun.

Re: 28 Gauge Choke Suggestions?
Just to add, Trulock lists its most open choke at .550 and labeled as Cylinder. The Trulock Skeet 1 is shown at .547.

Re: 28 Gauge Choke Suggestions?
bc, thanks for that information - reinforces what doc says. One question - isn’t .550 the bore diameter of a 28 gauge which would be considered Cylinder choke? Just wondering how you can have a choke that is .552, i.e. more open than Cylinder?

Re: 28 Gauge Choke Suggestions?
Doc, with the IM choke I’m getting less than volleyball sized groups at 20 yards. Maybe between a softball and a volleyball. What might I expect with an IC choke?

Re: 28 Gauge Choke Suggestions?
I should mention that she was using the more open choked barrel on those misses. Just wondering if maybe that open choked barrel should be even more open than IM (.535)? Or would a lead load possibly give a more open pattern, but still have enough pattern density in the small gauge to effectively ki...

Re: 28 Gauge Choke Suggestions?
I have a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot on the gun. Both barrels hit to the same POA.
Any thoughts on using a lead load in the more open choked barrel?

28 Gauge Choke Suggestions?
I have a question regarding choke constrictions for a 28 gauge Stevens 555. My wife has been having trouble with missing birds in close. I think the problem is the patterns are too tight. I am currently running a Tru-choke .520 (Super Full) diameter for the “tight” choked barrel and a Tru-choke .535...

Re: Gobbler calls
I have two Haints, a wooden and a plastic, and a Hale Fire. I much prefer the Hale Fire. I use it mostly as a locator, but this year I plan to use it more when trying to bring in henned up toms. I’ve been reluctant to try it for that for fear of spooking birds, but after reading the posts here I thi...

Another great was is to roll in flour, then dredge through egg wash, then roll in seasoned Panko crumbs, then deep fry. It’s on the Meat Eater website and he calls it Turkey Schnitzel.

Re: Black Hills Bound
Spent four days hunting in the Wyoming portion of the Black Hills. I hunted all public land, as I did in South Dakota. Did not find very many birds and had to move around a lot. Finally killed one around 2:00 PM on the fourth day. All in all, it’s been a great trip to the Black Hills and a wonderful...

Re: Black Hills Bound
4249AA9E-592A-4876-873E-2C065E6CB6A3.jpeg I’ve been in the Black Hills since Thursday. Didn’t hear a lot of gobbling, mostly because the weather has been bad. In between wind and rain events, I managed to call in and kill a nice two-year old yesterday at around 3:00 PM. It happened pretty fast, but...
