First Bird Despite Disrespectful Hunters

Last year on opening day, we were hit with the lows and highs of hunting all in one day. After being the first one to the spot, I am a waterfowl hunter, so that means something to me, but apparently doesn't mean anything to others, we had hunters swing in and cut in behind us a shoot birds on their ...

Re: What's Your Strangest Hunt?

My strangest morning was a cool crisp Good Friday some years ago. I had killed 4 of my 5 birds already and decided to go to a place on our lease that is almost impossible to access, but this morning I had plenty of time and wasn’t in any hurry to limit out. I found an opening for listening and stoo...

Re: What's Your Strangest Hunt?

A friend has a farm which has a large bottom pasture that backs up to a large ridge w/ a creek at the base. Birds will roost on the steep ridge and pitch down across the creek into the bottom. I got a call from my friend asking for help with a large mature gobbler which was harassing and chasing hi...

What's Your Strangest Hunt?

Last year we had a BIG tom working this field. After playing games with him all morning, an airplane buzzed the field flying low which sent the gobbler into a gobbling frenzy before running towards us, ultimately giving us the shot. We couldn't believe it! The tom ended up weighing in a 24lbs with 1...

That would have been cool to see!

Re: Bald Eagles and Long Beards (They Don't Mix)

The first time we hunted Wyoming I was blown away at the routine of the turkeys out there. They did the same thing at the same place, at the same time daily. As long as you didn't roost hunt them, they would do the same routine. I had killed my bird on the first evening and we were hunting the same...

Bald Eagles and Long Beards (They Don't Mix)

Last year we were on a pretty routine hunt on one of our farms. We had some rain and we knew the birds were working a field so everything was unfolding just the way we wanted it to. Then all of the sudden two bald eagles swooped in on the field and after that we had to go into an unconventional stal...

Re: One tactic in your bag of tricks...

Mine is simple, patience...been set up on birds and get impatient and try to move in tighter, or just don't wait out an area I know birds are frequenting (when birds aren't talking). We don't have many properties where we can really get out and run, so sometimes walking hurts way more than it helps.
