Re: Merriam Hunt

Bumped up SNM again. Still a lot of TBD but did read a little more on the web site. Realistically the altitude may be a little much for me at this stage of life. Did a weather check on Cloudcroft NM. Surprised it is so mild this time of year. At least it seems to be this 7 day forecast.

Re: Merriam Hunt

Quick peek I took yesterday at SNM didn't appear to have prices. Lots of 2018 TBD stuff. Be curious also. I can fly cheaper and more direct to Denver than NM so I'll probably stick with eastern WY. Probably the key word. Doesn't hurt to have options.

Re: Merriam Hunt

Give Shanna and guy a call at center of the nation outfitters.....they border Wyoming and SD....i killed a bird on their property the first morning in Wyoming and the next morning I drove into SD and killed one.... Great people and the price is right.... Glad you gave the names "Shanna and Guy" sin...

Re: Have you got a Knight & Hale Gobbler Guide?

Yes - I carry one in my vest at times. It is pretty accurate. Lived for nine years in the western KY area and often visited K&H's Cadiz, Ky operation in the early 2000s. Heard it is long gone from there now. Too bad. No idea on any collector value.

Re: Florida Whitetail - yesterday

Thanks - except I double posted the 2016-2017 pic. This deer survived and we think he may now be the big boy in the first set of pics on this thread with his 2017-18 antlers. I'm not going to try for any more deer this season so I'm hoping he survives one more week of FL hunting. Other guys do hunt ...

Re: Florida Whitetail - yesterday

Going to attempt to add a picture. This is what we believe is the 2017-2018 version of this deer that survived the 2016-2017 season. Does not look like an old deer to me. Much discussion about the picture on some FL forums. I don't think this deer is over 2 1/2 years old. Others disagree.

I have noticed that animals are bigger the further north you go.
Yes they are and there is a biological term for that. Maybe someone will know it. It has to do with only bigger deer can survive northern winters so these are the genes that are passed on.

Florida Whitetail - yesterday

Don't normally hunt whitetail in Florida preferring to concentrate mostly on spring turkey. We run several cameras almost year round and shortly after Hurricane Irma (Sept 10th) we began getting pictures of two super bucks and a few other nice ones in our main turkey woods. The deer season in our se...

Re: Expedition Time (please read)

 Doug is pretty sharp. I sent him a check by snail mail and he just replied that he did receive it . I don't do PayPal but this worked out fine for me.

BTW - post going on Florida forums that they are already gobbling. Won't be long.

Nice job! Coincidentally I heard some yipping this morning in our neighborhood a few minutes ago. Not unusual and we have seen them at times. Often looked at the FoxPro. Will look more seriously now.

Re: Anyone Turkey Hunting in Florida ??

We no longer hunt them in the fall since it is long beards only (a few archery exceptions) and prefer the spring hunts. Often see strutters on the game cameras by January. Not a surprise.

Re: What is the plan for afternoon hunting?

I always seem to prefer morning also. Having started my turkey hunting in a State that only then allowed hunting until noon it got to be a habit. The few times we have hunted where afternoon hunting was legal we did well. My lone FL bird in 2016 was taken around 2pm. A buddies opening day 2014 FL bi...

Re: 2017 Ohio Deer Chronicles – 6

I'm a little behind in my responses. Friends in Meigs did very little this gun season other than youth weekend. Most waiting on the upcoming weekend hunt and late muzzleloader in January. I went up - ONCE - for that January muzzleloader hunt. Leaving 70 degree FL for a 10 degree OH hunt was a little...

That should sound familiar Jason. Everything is going to be a crap shoot depending on both weather and interference from other hunters. On public land hope for a bird that only gobbles once and that you are the only one close enough to hear him. :struttin:

That's why there is Military Time. Of course old guys would need a pocket calculator to do that pesky add/subtract 12. Good luck George. The warm deer season in OH is giving some of the local boys fits. Betting Saturday will see a large kill. Some claim they are going to wait until late muzzleloader...

Great offer. Myself and a buddy are still stumbling around the internet researching various states and areas for a Merriam hunt this spring. Have almost eliminated the guided outfitters ($$$) and will probably just roam around some National Forest on our own. Sometimes "no plan" can be a good plan f...
