Re: Unbelievable turkey calling

I mimic his calling often, well sort of[emoji23]

His soft stuff is impressive, I’ve never had trouble with aggressive calling but that subtle stuff, arrrg. His subtle clucks are amazing!

Re: Getting soft

I’m shooting 1 5/8, looking at trying 1 3/8 and 1 1/4.

I’m content with a 50 yard gun.

When I can get to my friends place and use his shot trap I will play with loads.

Re: Michigan guys

I would call it a lack of terrain where I hunted, very flat with lots of impenetrable cutover, good nesting for sure. Very wet and birds were roosted over water in some sloughs, a ridiculous amount of mushroom hunters and more trash than I’ve ever seen, I mean it was a garbage dump! Lots of birds th...

Killed a bird last week that wouldn’t come off a ridge for 2 hours, gobbled at him and he died 10 minutes later!

Nebraska needs to alter their management, but they like the money from the 3 bird limit!

Let’s say it does what it claims, how close to you does an animal have to be to detect your “force” field?

I think I’ll pass!

Re: Merriams vs easterns?

Last few years where I hunted Nebraska the pressure has gotten to the birds, tough to call in and numbers are down!

If you find I’m pressured birds out there you can not call too much!

Re: Who were your mentors?

My uncle Butch(John) was a hunting influence, but most of the hunting I got into he had never done, so I got to take him on many firsts, he was primarily a waterfowl hunter. He used to joke with us about archery Pronghorn hunting, can’t use his exact words but basically scoffed at hunting “goats”. F...

I love ambushing those stubborn birds, I even call at em then hall as- over to the spot before them, worked a few times, they never know what hit em!

Love the comment about eliminating them from the gene pool!

Maybe an 18.5 9.5 shot is like a 9 in 18?

Who cares as I am sure both are quite good!

Halloran, Sinclair but man there are many. I have killed a pile of birds with a Blodgett double trouble from 03, I really only use the slate side and it's really an amazing call, though I think it has more to do with my confidence in it!

Re: How was your season?

Jekyl and hyde for me, either the easiest birds Ive ever killed or nearly impossible! Took me more days to kill one Missouri bird than my last 5 combined, but every day I hunted Illinois either calling for someone or myself a bird died and one day a double. Then Got to Nebraska and killed one the fi...

Bird numbers are down drastically in Nebraska where I hunt anyway, Illinois and Missouri are also down. Seems to be a huge population of nest robbers and no shortage of birds of prey either!

My sbe2 shoots dead on with the beads which I prefer, my 20ga sa20 is off a little and has truglo adjustable iron sights, do not care for them much but they work. Likely go to an optic next year.

My wife has killed a handful of birds, 2 with a bow, she is a fair weather hunter and just likes being out in the spring woods, if it’s slow I find her a sunny spot and she takes a nap usually! Been a few springs since she made it out which sux!

Re: What is the plan for afternoon hunting?

I killed a bird in Indiana a few years back late in the season, I think it was close to 8:45 when I killed him headed back to roost, thick timber and it was getting pretty dark in there, flames came out of the barrel on that one!

The average life span a turkey is only a few years so i would say it is just a preferred roost area, unless you have only seen them a year or two?

For the breast I simply divide into similar sized steaks and just grill it with olive oil salt and pepper, just make sure you get the temp right and its still juicy, delicious! Legs thighs and wings go into soup with wild rice.
