Re: Mouth Calls vs Friction Calls and Trumpet style calls

When I started hunting, I used mouth calls only. A few years later, I played around with box and pot calls when birds weren't responding. Even later, I used them about 50/50. But in the last few years, I switched to mostly using pot calls. Of course, I carry four different pots and eleven strikers, ...

A local gunsmith quoted me $20 per hole, but ended up only charging me $25 for the both.

Re: How was your season?

I vote "Above average but not better than last year". The weather ranged from brutally cold to brutally hot. The birds worked fine when it as cold, BUT not when it was hot. I was able to tag out in MO and IA on the cold days, but the KS days were scorchers and shut down their Easterns.

The habitat is so broken up in my parts that you can kill 10 birds on 160 acres...yet not hear a peep on the 1600 acres across the road.

Re: Midwest turkey decline

The Iowa farms I hunted seemed way down this year; HOWEVER the Missouri farms, less than 50 miles away, were just fine. The problems appear to be very localized.

Re: Hunting in Kansas next week, need advice

I hunted near Salina Wednesday and Thursday. I didn't hear anything on Wednesday until about 7:30pm, and that what was just a few gobbles before flyup. On Thursday morning, I heard a few roost gobbles and worked a strutter all morning. He stayed glued to three hens and followed them off to what I'm ...

I've walked back to my truck on multiple occasions to find birds strutting beside it. I wouldn't even bother covering it.

They didnt do much research into that 'vast amounts of public land' in Texas. Also had Missouri's license cost wrong.

Populations in southern Iowa and northern Missouri (where I usually hunt) appear steady for the last few years, but still not quite up their peak from '90s.

I would probably stick with my BPS. I like playing around with other guns, though. I'm trying out a new M2 this year, but I wouldn't complain if I HAD TO switch back to my BPS.
